Lal Qila was built by Shah Jahan in 1639, and continued to function as the seat of Mughal royalty right up to the ghadar of 1857.

The Fort is described as representing the peak of the unique Indo-Persian aesthetic championed by Mughal architects. Unfortunately, much of the the exquisite marble works were destroyed by the British in 1857, but what remains, bears ample witness to the magnificence of an eclipsed age.
